The current technologies of orchid cultivation, through the use of greenhouses with computerized management and control, guarantee a much more abundant and less expensive production of orchids than in the past. In addition, some species of orchids produced in greenhouses are very resistant and suitable for long flowering even at home and in more frequented environments such as offices and shops.

Since ancient times, orchids have been considered special flowers, symbols of perfection. Thanks to their exclusive charm and their original beauty, they have always been synonymous with sophisticated elegance. Their refined look makes them particularly suitable for communicating love, passion, sensuality.

To keep them in good health it is enough to respect some simple rules of care and maintenance.

Choose the right  orchid and bring it home carefully

Among the various species of orchid, some are particularly demanding, and require light, temperature and humidity conditions rather complicated to recreate and keep out of the greenhouse.

For this reason, at the moment of the purchase, it is necessary to make sure that it is a robust and easily adaptable species, like the so-called Butterfly Orchid.

In any case, it is important to carefully evaluate the climatic characteristics of the environment in which they will be planted and the time that you can devote to care, in relation to the needs of the plant.

These attentions must begin with the transport towards home. In fact, even the most resistant species fear air currents and temperature changes. For this reason it is necessary to keep them sheltered -avoiding to leave them for a long time in the car- until they have reached their destination.

Place it in a bright and humid environment

Orchids placed in dark environments, even if they remain healthy, have difficulty in flowering. Therefore, the most suitable position is close to a window equipped with a filtering curtain, which protects them from direct sunrays but ensures them all the light they need.

Moreover, to recreate the humidity of their natural microclimate, it is necessary to lodge the pot in a rather large saucer full of wet expanded clay. Another indispensable advice is to spray the leaves (not the flowers) daily with natural water, poor in limestone.

Water and fertilise with moderation

The orchids need little water: it is sufficient to check the soil every 4-5 days and to water enough to make it humid and, after a quarter of an hour, to empty the under-water of the water that has not been absorbed.

The best time to do this is in the earliest hours of morning

Fertilisation should also be done sparingly. During the flowering period, it will be sufficient to use every 10-15 days the nutrient sticks or the gradual releasing drops, putting the soil to rest for a couple of months when the flowering ends .

Repot after the first flowering

When the orchids have adapted to the new habitat, immediately after the first blooming, it is necessary to replace the small container inside which they are usually supplied, with a pot of only one size more.

In occasion of the first transplantation, it is necessary to fill the new pot with the specific substratum for orchids, formed by peat and small pieces of bark, which is the most suitable for the characteristics of the roots of these plants.
